Tibetan Reflexology is believed to be the oldest surviving form of Reflexology and is based upon an ancient Tibetan system of healing which can be applied to the feet and lower leg to aid rapid healing. This technique originated in Tibet thousands of years ago before Acupuncture was discovered. This technique was brought to the fore in the 1930's by Stanley Burroughs and is used throughout the world. In fact, Stanley Burroughs ideas of healing were so radical for his time, that he was imprisoned and his book - 'Healing for the Age of Enlightenment' was written whilst in prison for these beliefs. His manuscripts were smuggled out of prison by his wife, who visited him regularly in a wheelchair - though she was not wheelchair bound. She placed his writings on the seat of the wheelchair, knowing that she would not be searched when leaving to go home. We are thankful for their ingenuity, otherwise his book and teachings would not be available to us today.
Tibetan Reflexology works in conjunction with the nervous system using the 'Vitaflex' technique (Vita Flex simply means vitality through the reflexes), which stimulates and heals the body, mind and spirit at a very deep level. The hand technique is a rolling movement with all four fingers, as opposed to the 'caterpillar' movement used during classic Reflexology. This particular hand movement acts like a light switch - with each movement the nervous system is triggered very rapidly and this stimulates the body to heal itself. It is unique amongst the various pressure point therapies in that it is not simply a direct pressure on a point, but more like a rotation or swing through the point. The fingers are rotated into, then on and over the points in one fast smooth movement.
Tibetan Reflexology is a great addition to any Reflexologists repertoire, allowing you to have two completely different techniques at your fingertips. It can be used during taster sessions at health fairs or when time is at a premium because of the speed with which it can be practised. It usually takes around 25-30 minutes to perform (depending how experienced you are with the technique) and follows a specific pattern.
An exert from 'Healing for the Age of Enlightenment' - "The standard teachings tell us we have a nervous system, a circulatory system and a bony structure. However, susperseding and controlling all the systems (and the mind) is the reflex system not generally recognised by orthodox medicine. Vita Flex can be considered to be the complete set of controls. Each time the control points are pressed there is an electric spark of energy which goes to an exact point. When it reaches this point, necessary changes are made automatically. There are more than five thousand Vita Flex points compared to three hundred and sixty-five acupuncture points (as usually taught). Since this system is very fast, one will never stay more than a moment on any point, thus preventing unnecessary irritations. No piece of machinery made by man, no matter how wonderful it is, can compare with the mechanism that the Creator gave to us in this beautiful body of ours."
